The Great House of God
by Max Lucado

Using the Lord's Prayer as a floor plan for The Great House of God, Max Lucado introduces us to a God who desires his children to draw close to him. Warm your heart by the fire in the living room. Nourish your spirit in the kitchen. Step into the hallway and find forgiveness. No house is more complete, no foundation more solid. So come to the house built just for you, The Great House of God.

The Bible Jesus Read
by Philip Yancey

Philip Yancey, editor at large and columnist for Christianity Today, follows up his back-to-back bestselling books, What's So Amazing About Grace and The Jesus I Never Knew, with The Bible Jesus Read, an exploration of the significance of the Old Testament to today's Christian.

Given previous book titles--Where Is God When It Hurts, Disappointment with God, and The Gift of Pain--one might jokingly suggest that in the Old Testament Yancey has found his true home. He acknowledges that in studying key sections of the Hebrew Bible (he concentrates on Job, Deuteronomy, The Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets) he found himself confronted by the core questions that haunt his Christian faith: Do I matter? Does God care? Why doesn't God act? As always, Yancey explores these central human questions with a style that is marked by directness, humor, and honesty. He writes not as theologian or mystic but as a questioning seeker. Rather than providing simple answers--he in fact says that "by no means did Jesus resolve the problem of pain"--he instead affirms the words of Thomas Merton, which he quotes in his Introduction: "There is ... nothing comfortable about the Bible--until we manage to get so used to it that we make it comfortable for ourselves."

Even as he finds the Old Testament a "companion for my pilgrimage," so is Yancey a companion for his readers, precisely through his willingness to ask --and his courage not to answer--all the hard questions. --Doug Thorpe

MOMS Club of Greensburg

The MOMS Club of Greensburg is a support and social group for at-home moms. MOMS stands for Moms Offering Moms Support. We are part of the international MOMS Club Organization. At-home mothers from Greensburg, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and Jeannette residents living in the Hempfield Area School District are welcome to join our club. (There are neighboring chapters in Latrobe, New Stanton and Irwin for moms living there.) We hold our Membership Meetings at Maplewood Church, the first Tuesday of each month, where we have speakers, discussions and other fun programs. Children are encouraged to come to all of our functions. We also plan other activities through the month such as Park Play Days, Tours, Family Parties around the holidays, Playgroups, Activity Clubs for mothers with special interests and a fun Mom's Night Out.

We also do at least one service project per year that benefits a local charity that supports needy mothers and children in our community. This year we plan on selling pies from The Pie Shoppe (in Laughlintown) in December. (If you would like to order a pie, please contact our Administrative Vice President, Michelle Gordon at 724-838-8275.) All proceeds will be donated to the Blackburn Center - who was kind enough to come to our August Meeting and give a presentation to the children on "Hands are not for Hitting". Previous donations have gone to the Welcome Home Shelter, Greensburg Hempfield Area Library, March of Dimes Walk America, Birthright, Operation Uplink and others.

For more information, please go to our website. Anyone interested in joining can contact our Membership Vice President, Sharon Smiles at 724-838-7109.
